This garden is at the back of a Victorian school that was converted into a home in 1960. Following a double storey extension at the rear the garden was transformed from what was predominantly lawn with apple trees at the perimeter. Integral to the design was reinstating an old wildlife pond, outside the back door of the extension, that had been swallowed up by vegetation and neglect. The clients were keen on a garden that embraced wildlife and was loose and informal, so that it would harmonise with the rural landscape that backs onto the property. The brief also asked for raised beds for vegetable growing and cut flowers. The clients frequently use flowers from the many planting beds in the garden to practice floristry. An area of lawn was to be retained as a space for their dog to play, with a small wildflower meadow to further encourage biodiversity. The wildflower meadow has been a source of great fascination, improving year on year, as the yellow rattle has become established. The materials used for the hardscaping were carefully considered to complement the house. The colours blend with the woolpit white brick of the house and the character of the timber sleepers and reclaimed bricks used for the paths impart a feeling appropriate for the rural location.
